What is Epee?
The modern sport of Epee Fencing gets its name from the 19th Century Épée de Combat. Epee means “sword” in French and refers to the weapon used (the three fencing swords are epee, foil and sabre – epee is the largest and heaviest of the three weapons).
Today, epeefencing somewhat resembles 19th century duelling. An épée fencer must hit the target with the tip of the weapon. Modern epee uses electric weapons and the circuit is closed when a touch is made, registering the hit.
